Character Creation

Character creation is a mix of the Dresden Files RPG and Bulldogs!

Create your characters by going down the following list:

  1. Pick a Name
  2. Know your Power Level
  3. Choose your High Concept
  4. Choose your Trouble
  5. You’re Human…
  6. Other Aspects
  7. Pick your Skills
  8. Assign Stunts

Names

This is easy, but pick a name for your character. During this character creation, I’ll be using Riddick, of the movie Pitch Black, as the example character.

Name: Riddick

Power Level

Your power level is Trouble. You know just enough to be dangerous. You’re not all that experienced, but you have a bit of a reputation to maintain.

This is distinct from your character’s Trouble, which is a defining Aspect.

At the Trouble Power Level, you get:

  • Refresh: 7 (You spend Refresh on Special Abilities and Stunts
  • Skills: 25 points
  • Skill Cap: Great (+4)

Name: Riddick
Power Level: Trouble

High Concept

A character’s High Concept is an Aspect, but it’s one of the more defining Aspects. Think of it like your job, or your calling in life. It’s what you’re good at, but it’s also a duty you have to deal with, and it’s filled with problems of its own. A good High Concept will come with some good and some bad.

Riddick is a badass. He can kill with a teacup and escape any prison known to man. It’s who he is, and it’s his greatest strength. But being a stone-cold badass motherfucker doesn’t come without its price.

Name: Riddick
Power Level: Trouble
High Concept: Stone-cold Badass Motherfucker

Trouble

Every character also has some sort of Trouble (which is also an Aspect) that’s a part of his life and story. Think of it this way: If your High Concept is what and who your character is, your trouble is the answer to this question: What complicates your High Concept?

Your trouble can be internal or personal, like a bad temper, or external, like a dedicated enemy. Both threaten the character and are difficult to contain. They drive the character to action, voluntarily or not.

Everyone is out to get Riddick. He’s got bounties on his head from every government between Mercury and Uranus.

Name: Riddick
Power Level: Trouble
High Concept: Stone-cold Badass Motherfucker
Trouble: Wanted. By EVERYONE.

You’re Human

This is a major departure from Bulldogs!, where there are ten core alien races and players are encouraged to create their own. You can’t be an alien, a robot, or the like.

However, the doesn’t stop you from coming up with technology or evolutionary adaptations that mark you as somehow superior to a run-of-the-mill person. Things like a cyborg arm or even psychics are okay, in moderation. Think Riddick, not the Terminator.

The refresh costs for Special Abilities like these appear in Bulldogs! starting on page 37.

Riddick is a human, but he got a special coating on his corneas while in super-max prison. Now he can see in the dark! Low-light vision costs -1 Refresh

Name: Riddick
Power Level: Trouble
High Concept: Stone-cold Badass Motherfucker
Trouble: Top of the Most Wanted List
Special Ability: Low Light vision [–1]

Other Aspects

The following sections are designed to help you flesh out your character. Who is he? Where did he come from? What made him what he is today? What has he done, and who has he done it with?

Choose one Aspect related to each of the questions below.

Where did you come from?

Write up a paragraph or two about where your character came from, or what his childhood (or young adulthood) was like. Get a feel for where you’ve been so that you know where you’re going.

No one knows where Riddick comes from, and he’s not talking. Rumors hint at some cryptic hints about poverty and squalor, but they’re just that: rumors. Even though it’s a bit of a cop-out, I chose the MYSTERIOUS Aspect for this phase.

Name: Riddick
Power Level: Trouble
High Concept: Stone-cold Badass Motherfucker
Trouble: Top of the Most Wanted List
Special Ability: Low Light vision [–1]
Other Aspects: Mysterious

What shaped you?

Write up a paragraph or two about your character’s “middle history”, when his High Concept came to the forefront. Toss your character into a situation where he’s forced to make a choice or take decisive action. This how your character came into his own and began to realize his potential.

When Riddick was tossed into his first prison, he came to a startling realization: Escape would be easy. The other inmates were not predators, they were stepping stones to freedom. Riddick became an ESCAPE ARTIST.

Name: Riddick
Power Level: Trouble
High Concept: Stone-cold Badass Motherfucker
Trouble: Top of the Most Wanted List
Special Ability: Low Light vision [–1]
Other Aspects: Mysterious, Escape Artist

What was your first adventure?

Write up your character’s brief adventure, and sum it up as a new Aspect for your character.

It turns out escape was anything BUT easy. Time and again Riddick attempted to escape, and time and again he was captured. Each time he got a little further, but he’d always get careless and take unnecessary risks and end up in the hole again.

Slowly, he learned that a bit of patience can lead to good things.

Name: Riddick
Power Level: Trouble
High Concept: Stone-cold Badass Motherfucker
Trouble: Top of the Most Wanted List
Special Ability: Low Light vision [–1]
Other Aspects: Mysterious, Escape Artist, Patience Is A Virtue

Whose path have you crossed? (Cooperative)

STOP HERE You’ll need to talk with other players to finish your background, and you should wait until we have a final tally of players.

You can skip ahead to Stunts and Skills if you have the Bulldogs! sourcebook.

Who else’s path have you crossed? (Cooperative)

This is also a co-operative exercise, so you should wait for final picks.

How did you end up working for Class D Freight? (Cooperative or Solo)

You can work up a story with a shipmate if you’d like, or go solo. Either way, you hit the bottom, and are now working for Class D Freight.

Skills

You have 25 skill points, capped at Great (+4)

Stunts

Stunts typically cost 1 refresh.
